Calling All YouTubers

Hi, my name is James Revels. I compose instrumental music for YouTube and I’m looking to exchange free promotion of your videos on my blogs, Twitter, etc. for the use of my instrumentals as background music for your video. If you are interested leave your link in the comment or email me at jamesrevelsiii@gmail.com. I look forward to collaborating with you!

New Instrumental – Opportunity

Help Me Attend My Film Debut – Official Video

Recently, I composed the score of a short film project that won a contest and is part of a festival in Cambridge, Massachusetts on June 29th.  2 problems. I live in Dayton, Ohio and after doing some numbers crunching, I realized I wouldn’t have enough money for both hotel and transportation. After exhausting all my options (aka family members 😛 ) I created a go fund me campaign. I don’t particularly like crowd funding because it feels like I’m begging, but after remembering a potato salad kick starter inadvertently got funding for $50,000 (which happened in Columbus,OH btw), I realized asking for $300 to go experience a moment of my life and career that I’ll never have again is modest in comparison. Thanks for your time reading this. Please share and I hope to see you in Massachusetts on the 29th!

Piano Improv @ Local College

So, I went down to the local community college today. Sinclair Community College and took over their piano lab with my awesome improv. I know you’ll enjoy it!

If you like that you should totally support me by listening and buying my new single Genesis. It’s a story about how I created music in 8 days. A crazy concept of a song, but well worth the listen if I do say so myself. Album/Track Art, Lyrics, Instrumental was done by yours truly.

EARGASM – Lifeblood (Audio SeXXX 3rd Year Anniversary)

Remember the guy to the left of me in the “Dabbing for my City” post a couple weeks ago? Probably not, but either way his name is Cedric and he is in a band called “In Night & Nature” and they’ve recently released a single called “Lifeblood” and it’s amazing! If you’re into rock, You need to check it out.

Also did I forget to mention but today is also Audio SeXXX’s 3rd Anniversary. Thanks everyone for 3 great years.

My friend Cedric isn’t the only one who dropped a single. I drop the single to my project “Genesis”, yesterday. You should totally listen to it and if you love it. It’s purchasable for a mere dollar. Enjoy! Thanks for listening.

The Platinum Album Dead?

rr0111-404_lg

Last fall, I found an article mentioning how the definition of platinum albums needs to change in order to keep up with the current market. Apparently, the RIAA, the people who certify albums as gold, platinum, etc. think so as well. Recently, the RIAA has implemented a new certification system that includes streaming views along side album sales.150 views counts as one download and ten downloads (1500 views) count as an album sale. Under this new standard Kendrick Lamar’s album “To Pimp a Butterfly” has become certified platinum even thought it’s only sold under 400,000 copies. Kendrick and his team seem to find the change distasteful, but I think that this is the only natural evolution of the music industry. Piracy is as rampant as ever and with less people buying albums and opting to stream on YouTube and Spotify. The one downfall I foresee is that more albums will go platinum due to spectacle rather than quality, since streaming doesn’t mean the person streaming enjoyed the content. (Although, you’d need 1.5 Trillion plays to go platinum with no album sales so that’s comforting)

Preview: A Guide to Music Composition

Other than mixing down music and composing I’ve been working on my video editing skills on a series I’m calling “A Guide to Music Composition. Here’s as snippet from the script s well as a short video snippet underneath.

Hi, I’m James Revels Composer and thanks for watching “A Guide to Music Composition”. Together we will be exploring the routine I use as a guideline for creating my music. I assume that you already have a general knowledge of music theory so that I can reduce jargon in order to be more accessible to new or non-musicians.
The step in the guide are:
Studying/Review
Pre-writing
Creating a Rhythmic Motif
Choosing a Scale
Creating a Theme
Creating Accompaniment
Developing Orchestration
Mixing the Track
