Synopsis of Escapism

Brief Summery

“Escapism” is a  5 track mini-album created as an escape from the norms of popular hip hop. It is thought provoking and challenges the listener with creative storytelling, clever word play, and unique diction. All the lyrics, instrumentals, engineering and art work will be done by myself. I chose to do a short 5 track album because I intend to use it as a demo tape as well as a performance set when I seek out gigs. Each track will also have it’s own unique album art which I may combine into a single poster as the release date approaches. As of now the release date for the entire project is to be announced, but the first single “Genesis” will be releasing this Thursday, March 24th, 2016.

Track List

  1. Genesis
  2. Artisan
  3. A More
  4. Euphoria
  5. Escapism/I’d Rather

Stay tuned tomorrow for a synopsis of the first single “Genesis”

Thanks for Reading

As thanks for reading, below I have a sneak preview of the album art for “Genesis”. Hope you enjoyed this synopsis and support the release.

Why I Don’t Use an Artist Name

When you think of musicians and artists you usually refer to them with a pseudonym. A fake name that they give themselves to be identified throughout their career. I have nothing against it’s use but, personally it’s not for me and here’s why.

  1. I’m Proud of My Name: James Revels III. I love it. It’s unique(ish) and like the the way it rolls off my tongue. James was passed down from my granddad to my uncle and now me, so it’s like a passed torch. I also love my last name because it’s a memorial  to my (very) distant uncle Hiram Revels, the first African American senator. With that much history behind my name I have a lot to be proud of.
  2. Pseudonyms as Alter Egos: I prefer to use my name because when I create my art I feel I’m at my realest. A lot of artists describe themselves having an alter ego or separate personality when they create, I feel the opposite. I feel like this creative side is the true me and when I work my day job I’m putting on a mask. Some artist put on a certain “image” while the only image I wish to portray is an accurate portrait of myself.
  3. Google Friendly: Because my full name is relatively unique it’s easier to corner my own niche of keywords to google.  Type” James Revels” and the second auto-suggest is “James Revels the Composer” the third is “James Revels WordPress”. Typing in “James Revels” in general, provides links that fill the entire ever crucial 1st page. This saved a lot of time that would have been wasted on thinking of an SEO friendly name.

So those are the reason’s that I use my real name instead of a made up one. Stay tuned for updates on my upcoming Hip-Hop Project “Escapism EP”. It’s a 5 track original EP that is an escape from the current norms of hip hop. I also released the album cover yesterday (also designed by yours truly) Check it out. If you like it hope you stay tuned as I get ready to release the first single “Genesis” in the next couple of weeks.

Apex – The Synopsis

Apex is an RPG I am working on using the program RPG Maker. I created it as a way to show case my music as well as my love for math via game design. Although, I have been working on this project for a few years now, I know I still have years to go before I get it to the perfect state I want it. So, in the meantime I’ll gather hype about the game slowly, but surely with updates including music and articles like this. Without further delay, the synopsis…

Apex Synopsis

Ever year on the planet of Atmos, there is a tournament held to determine the strongest warriors on the planet. These warriors are called the “Apex Warriors”. You and your two childhood friends Liliana & 6 Eyed Jack spent your entire lives training to fight in this tournament. The game follows your journey as you explore the planet of Atmos to grow stronger in order to protect your title as Apex, year after year.

(Below is a pic of the world map, a video with pre-alpha play footage and a music video for a theme of Atmos)

Realistic or Flashy?

So, I’m currently in a  dilemma. I have been working on building my Patreon Page for some months now and I am planning the “Please Support Me” video for it and I was thinking whether I should go with with Realistic or Flashy? Here’s what I mean…

The more realistic video would have me in front of the camera sitting on my air mattress (because I don’t have a chair >.<) being down to earth explaining the content I create in my humble studio apartment. I’ll probably set some of my equipment and stuff with me for visual interest.

The more flashy one would be me going over someone else house or finding another venue to record. Doing something a little more entertaining, but I’m not one who goes out his way for spectacle and I don’t want to come off cheesy.

Both Videos will be edited, of course, and have background music added in as well as a nicely edited intro sequence showing clips and pics from my work over the last 5 or 6 years. What do you think? Should I go the Humble realistic route or the more flashy entertaining route

Pros & Cons of Mass Media

We always hear about how TV is rotting our brains and video games making us violent, but lets take a step back and get an unbiased perspective shall we?

Pros

I think the biggest pro of mass media is the ability for shared experience. It makes the world feel smaller because we have shared experiences and references strengthening the culture as a whole.

Another major pro is the exposure for the arts and an outlet for those creative minds. Mass media also encourages collaboration which is necessary for the evolution of art.

Also, according to  the book “What’s Bad is Good for You” by Steven Johnson, he believes that the complex subplots and mechanics of video games, TV, etc help our critical thinking faculties and mental health overall.

Cons

Sadly, this connectivity comes at a cost. The major con I see with Mass media is the weakness with an system, it’s too rigid. Since, a lot of many for a lot of people are involved many of the innovations are sedated for profit. This not only makes the companies and artist unmotivated to change, but it also makes consumers numb. This is why there are so many reboots and sequels that sell and tend to disappoint most people.

The final con is geared towards informational rather than artistic media. Mass media has the power of misinformation and sensationalization. News outlets have to ability to  cause mass panic or distract the people from problems at hand. Although, it does have to power to unite, it usually doesn’t help the rating which is why it doesn’t happen often.

There’s my thoughts on the Pros and Cons of Mass Media.

Advanced Music Theory – Measure Grid

As a composer I’ve found the current system of writing music perfect for playing music but conveys little about the music theory structure. I usually make graphs and charts in graph paper notebook, but I decided to take my work to excel and made this little beauty. Let me know what you think. I’ve never explained this before so if you have any questions leave a comment

What is this?

Wonder what this is and what it has to do with music? Stay tuned I’m in the process of making a video explaining soon. in the meantime make your best guess in the comments or check out some of my other videos embedded below.
